Music for Kids Non Profit - Bringing Music back to the Schools
    SEE NEW UPDATES Below!!!

My name is Sue Lewis, founder and Executive Director of Music 4 Kids.  This non profit organization was officially registered with the State of Oregon in October 2009 to provide music classes for under served kids in the Portland Public School system.  The time seemed right since many music programs have been cut especially in lower income areas.  For more information on my professional background as music educator and musician see www.suelewismusic.com

Executive Director's Progress Report, Updated
August 22, 2010
By Sue Lewis

I am pleased to list some high lights of what we have accomplished as an organization since our founding in October 2009

  • December 10, 2009:  Our first fund raising event "A Bluesy Christmas Concert and Silent Auction".  Thanks to all the help from our volunteers and the generosity from the local business community, we were able to raise money for our first music class.  A special thanks to LaRhonda Steele, one of the NW's premier R&B singer, who was the featured act. The Friends Choir, from the Center for Spiritual Living directed by LaRhonda, also performed.  Also performing was vocalist Kelli Raglione and MC Jennifer Lanier.
  • January 11, 2010: Our first music class took place at Rigler Elementary School located at 5401 NE Prescott Portland Oregon. The class was for K - 1st grade through the after school SUN program taught by myself, Sue Lewis.
  • March 4, 2010: The Rigler Elementary k - 1st graders performed for the end of the term SUN Show Case and amazed friends and family with what they learned in their music class.  Again, a special thanks to LaRhonda  Steele and Lilly Heller and the Cedro Willie Band who came by as special guest artists to teach and accompany the kids.
  • March 5, 2010: 3 New board members selected for  Music 4 Kids as follows: Pam Brandis, Lyn Morgan and Shirley Becker.  Final By Laws, Articles of Incorporation and Mission Statement approved.
  • April 5, 2010: A new level one class will start at Rigler and a continuing level 2 class will start for students who participated in the winter term.
  • May 21, 2010:  Rigler Elementary School Carnival and performance by K - 1st grade Music 4 Kids class, click on "events" on left side of this page
  • May 27, 2010:  Benefit Concert featuring Cedro Willie Band and the Rigler Elementary k-1st graders music students.
  • August 15, 2010:  We are very pleased to announce our newest intern at Rigler Elementary, Amanda Baker!  Welcome Amanda.  Amanda will be teaching K - 1st grade general music at Rigler thus continuing the program Sue Lewis started in January 2010.  Amanda is an Early Childhood Music instructor specialist.  She has successfully completed the intensive Kodaly Certification class at PSU this month, August 2010 adding to her impressive list , August 1 to 15th 2010.  Kodaly training is especially good for this age group as it includes many fun games involving singing and movement that is so vital to a good music foundation.
